„species from afar“ ist eine Erkundung menschlicher Systeme, die zur Kategorisierung von Landschaften entwickelt wurden. An zwei Agavenblättern wurde ein chirurgischer Eingriff vorgenommen: In ein Blatt wurden die Koordinaten des Wachstums- und Sterbeortes der Pflanze getackert. Zur Erstellung von Karten wurde die Erde systematisch kartographiert und akribisch gerastert, Koordinatensysteme wurden geschaffen, um mit Hilfe von Zahlensystemen universelle Ortsangaben machen zu können. Diese Art der Aneignung der Welt durch den Menschen bildet die Grundlage für globale Systeme und basiert auf der Annahme, dass Pflanzen, Tiere und andere nicht-menschliche Akteure erfasst und kontrolliert werden können.

Die Agave Americana wuchs ursprünglich auf dem amerikanischen Kontinent im heutigen Mexiko und dem angrenzenden Teil der Vereinigten Staaten und wurde durch die Kolonisation nach Europa gebracht. Hier wurden botanische Gärten angelegt, um die mitgebrachten Pflanzen zu studieren. Von diesen Gärten aus verbreiteten sie sich unkontrolliert außerhalb der angestammten Gebiete und sind heute Spuren von Kolonisierung und Machtansprüchen.

“species from afar” is an investigation of the human systems developed to categorize landscapes. A surgical procedure was carried out on two agave leaves: The coordinates of the plant's place of growth and death were embroidered into one leaf. To create maps, the earth was systematically cartographed and meticulously gridded, coordinate systems were created in order to be able to provide universal location information using number systems. This type of appropriation of the world by humans forms the basis of global systems and is based on the assumption that plants, animals and other non-human actors can be recorded and controlled.

The Agave Americana originally grew on the American continent in what is now Mexico and the adjoining part of the United States and was brought to Europe through colonization. Botanical gardens were established here to study the plants brought back. From these gardens, they spread uncontrollably outside the established areas and are now traces of colonization and claims to power.
